Moncton Hawks: A Golden Era of AHL Hockey
Share
For more than a decade, the Moncton Hawks brought high-level professional hockey to Atlantic Canada. Based in Moncton, New Brunswick, the team competed in the American Hockey League (AHL) from 1987 to 1994 and served as the top minor-league affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets. During their run, the Hawks helped develop numerous players who would go on to skate in the NHL.

Playing their home games at the Moncton Coliseum, the Hawks quickly built a loyal following. Fans packed the arena to watch future NHL talent and fast-paced AHL hockey. The team enjoyed its greatest success in the 1987–88 season, when the Hawks captured the AHL’s Calder Cup championship, giving Moncton one of the biggest moments in its sports history.

Despite their success on the ice and strong fan support, the franchise relocated after the 1993–94 season. The team moved to become the St. John’s Maple Leafs, ending Moncton’s era in the AHL.
Though the Hawks are long gone, they remain an important part of Moncton’s sports legacy. For many fans in New Brunswick, the team represents a golden era when top-tier professional hockey filled the Coliseum and the city briefly sat at the center of the AHL hockey world.
