Rowdies Fever: Tampa Bay’s Wild Soccer Legacy

The Tampa Bay Rowdies are one of the most iconic and enduring soccer brands in the United States. Known for their vibrant green-and-gold colors, passionate fan base, and deep historical roots, the Rowdies have played a pivotal role in shaping professional soccer in Florida and across the country.

Origins: A Soccer Boom in the 1970s

The Rowdies were originally founded in 1975 as part of the North American Soccer League, a league that helped bring global attention to soccer in the U.S. during the 1970s. In a remarkable debut, the team won the Soccer Bowl championship in its inaugural season, immediately establishing itself as a powerhouse.

From the start, the Rowdies stood out—not just for their success, but for their personality. With quirky traditions like the “Fannies” cheer squad and the catchy “Kick in the Grass” theme song, the club embraced a fun, fan-first identity that made it one of the most recognizable teams of its era.

Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Rowdies were a major draw, helping Tampa Bay become a soccer hotbed. They remained active through multiple leagues after the NASL folded, before the original franchise ceased operations in 1993.

Revival and Modern Era

The Rowdies name returned in 2008, when a new ownership group launched a modern version of the club. The team began play in 2010 and later reclaimed the historic “Rowdies” name in 2011, fully reconnecting with its past.

Today, the Rowdies compete in the USL Championship, the second tier of American soccer. They play their home matches at Al Lang Stadium, a scenic waterfront venue in downtown St. Petersburg.

The modern club has enjoyed success of its own, including:

2012 NASL Championship (Soccer Bowl)

2020 USL Regular Season title (co-champions)

2021 Eastern Conference Championship

Despite competing below Major League Soccer, the Rowdies remain one of the most respected and historic clubs outside the top tier.

Identity and Culture

What truly sets the Rowdies apart is their identity. The name itself—chosen through a fan contest—reflects the loud, energetic spirit of soccer supporters.

Their signature green-and-yellow hoops have become synonymous with the club, bridging generations of fans from the NASL days to today’s USL era.

The Rowdies also share a long-standing rivalry with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, known as the “Florida Derby,” one of the most historic rivalries in American soccer.

A Lasting Impact

The Tampa Bay Rowdies were the first professional sports franchise in the Tampa Bay area, and their influence still resonates today.

They helped introduce high-level soccer to American audiences, built a passionate fan culture, and proved that the sport could thrive in the United States long before the rise of MLS.

From their championship-winning debut in 1975 to their modern resurgence, the Rowdies remain a symbol of soccer’s past, present, and future in America—a club where history, community, and energy continue to collide on the pitch.
