The Legacy of the Tokyo Lotte Orions
Share
For decades, the Tokyo Lotte Orions were one of the most recognizable teams in Japanese professional baseball. The franchise competed in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and spent much of its history in the Pacific League, where it built a reputation for passionate fans and memorable championship runs.

The team’s roots date back to 1950, when the franchise began as the Mainichi Orions. After several ownership and name changes, the club eventually became the Tokyo Lotte Orions in 1969 following sponsorship by the Japanese confectionery company Lotte Corporation. Playing at Kawasaki Stadium for many years, the Orions became known for their loyal fanbase and competitive teams.
One of the franchise’s greatest moments came in 1974 when the Orions captured the Japan Series championship. Led by standout players and strong pitching, the team defeated the powerful Chunichi Dragons to claim the title, cementing its place in Japanese baseball history.

In 1992, the franchise relocated to Chiba and rebranded as the Chiba Lotte Marines, marking the end of the Tokyo Lotte Orions era. While the team continued under its new identity, the Orions name remains an iconic chapter in Japanese baseball lore.
Today, the Tokyo Lotte Orions are remembered fondly by fans as a classic team of Japan’s baseball past—one that helped shape the history of professional baseball in Tokyo and beyond.
