The Story of the Vermont Expos

The Story of the Vermont Expos

For more than a decade, the Vermont Expos brought professional baseball to the Green Mountain State. Based in Burlington, Vermont, the team competed in the New York–Penn League from 1994 to 2005 as a Class A Short Season affiliate of the Montreal Expos. Playing their home games at historic Centennial Field, the team became a summertime tradition for baseball fans across the region.

The Vermont Expos were known for developing young prospects at the very beginning of their professional careers. Many players who suited up in Burlington were fresh out of college or recently drafted, taking their first steps toward the major leagues. Fans had the unique opportunity to watch future big-league talent in an intimate ballpark setting.

Despite strong community support and the charm of minor league baseball in a small city, the franchise eventually relocated after the 2005 season. The team moved to become the State College Spikes in Pennsylvania, bringing an end to the Vermont Expos era.

Though the team no longer exists, the Vermont Expos remain an important chapter in Vermont baseball history. For many fans, warm summer nights at Centennial Field—complete with young prospects, wooden bats, and the distant hope of the majors—represent the golden age of professional baseball in Burlington.
